Now, talking of holidays and fun, I have a question for you – Have you ever fantasized about spending your Easter holidays in outer space!? If you’d say – ‘Ahh, it sounds fanciful!’ Then, it’s probably because you’ve never heard of ‘Space Tourism’. I know it sounds fictional, sounds unreal, but not anymore!
Space tourism refers to a special kind of space travel, which is performed for recreational or business purposes. It aims at arranging a space journey for normal citizens like you and me, in exchange for money (of course!). To date, only the Russian Space Agency has successfully carried out regular commercial space flights, although a number of private companies are aiming to do so in the near future, including Virgin Galactic.
What could be your possible travel destinations in Space?
Nowadays in discussions, there are 2 tremendous opportunities that are giving away the chance to win an extraordinary adventure:
- SpaceX Inspiration4 mission, and
- dearMoon project
1. Inspiration4 is the world’s first all-civilian mission to space. The operation is going to be commanded by Jared Isaacman, the 37-year-old founder and Chief Executive Officer of Shift4 Payments and a renowned pilot and adventurer. Named in recognition of the four-person crew that will raise awareness and funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, this milestone represents a new era for human spaceflight and exploration.

2. dearMoon is the first civilian mission to the moon proposed to take place in 2023. The rocket developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX will make a week-long journey to the moon and back. In 2018, Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa purchased all the seats abroad this rocket. Wishing to give as many talented individuals as possible the opportunity to go, he announced in March 2021 his plans to choose 8 crew members from across the world. They continuously relaunch advertising, declaring the possibility of reaching the moon by 2023. However, this project still has too much under development.

Will Space travel ever be possible?
There is a thin line that still disconnects dreams from reality. And if it continues to get thicker, as unfortunately is happening lately, it might continue questioning the success of this new market. Similar projects in the past have been suffering from issues of full trust, reliability, and feasibility regarding the accomplishment of such projects. Probably, this is the reason we seldom get to hear stories like the opening of a new hotel on another planet.
Space tourism has been, almost, looked upon as something ludicrous in the past, but Virgin Galactic, SpaceX and Blue Origin are putting their best efforts to change that. Still, accessibility to space tourism remains limited to the richest of the rich, with ticket prices ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions. The development of these space tourism programs is costing these companies billions, and each has a different reason for pursuing this, as of yet, unproven market.
Maybe, the right way would be to concentrate the entire focus on the safety and economic viability of such projects in order to make them feasible and totally successful. So, those who believe in this and who really look forward to getting to see their space dreams come true one day need to be a little bit more patient.
