Webinar Details:
The webinar will allow the guests to engage with a former astronaut for the first time through an online private event.
Naoko will give us all the details of her life and success: from being an engineering student like us to becoming the second Japanese woman to fly in space. She will not only inspire us through her story but give us an insight into the arduous journey of becoming an astronaut.
Guest:
山崎 直子, Yamazaki Naoko is a Japanese engineer and former JAXA astronaut. She was the second Japanese woman to fly in space.
After getting both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Tokyo (1996), she joined the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA). She was part of the development team for the Japanese Experiment Module system integration.
Later on, in 1999, Yamazaki was selected as an astronaut candidate by the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA, now JAXA), and in 2004 she was assigned to the Astronaut Office Robotics Branch in Texas.
On April 5, 2010, Yamazaki entered space on the shuttle Discovery as part of mission STS-131. On April 20, 2010, she returned to Earth after spending 15.12 days in space.
Naoko now actively promotes STEM activities in Japan and abroad as an adviser to the Young Astronaut Club and Chairman of the Women in Aerospace program of the Japan Rocket Society.
